What is Bodybuilding?

Bodybuilding is a sport and form of physical training focused on developing and sculpting the muscles of the body through resistance training, nutrition, and often supplementation. The primary goal is to achieve a muscular, aesthetically pleasing physique characterized by well-defined muscle mass, symmetry, and low body fat. Unlike strength sports such as powerlifting, bodybuilding is judged on how a physique looks rather than how much weight an athlete can lift.

Bodybuilding competitions, often organized by federations such as the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness (IFBB), provide a platform for athletes to showcase their physiques onstage. Competitors are judged on criteria such as muscle size, symmetry, conditioning, and overall presentation - including posing and stage presence. Preparation typically combines a months-long training block aimed at building muscle with a strict diet in the final weeks to shed body fat and reveal maximum definition for the show.

Mandatory Poses

Front Double Biceps

The competitor stands facing forward, arms flexed, showcasing upper-body symmetry, muscle size, and definition in both biceps. This pose emphasizes the proportionality and balance of the chest, shoulders, and arms while highlighting the competitor's muscularity from the front.

Front Lat Spread

Facing the judges, the competitor spreads the lats wide while keeping the hands on the waist, accentuating upper-body width across the chest, shoulders, and back. By flaring the lats and engaging the core, competitors aim to create an imposing V-taper that emphasizes the fullness and thickness of their upper-body muscles.

Side Chest

Turning sideways, the competitor flexes the chest muscles while one arm extends forward and the other may be placed on the hip or behind the body. This pose showcases chest symmetry and fullness while highlighting shoulder and arm development from a side angle.

Side Triceps

Similar to the side chest pose, but with emphasis on the triceps. Standing sideways to the judges, the competitor presses one arm down and back to lock out and flex the triceps, showcasing its size and the horseshoe shape, while the rest of the body is held tight to highlight muscle separation and conditioning in the arms and shoulders.

Rear Double Biceps

The competitor faces away, flexing back muscles to showcase back width, thickness, and muscularity. This pose emphasizes the development of the lats, traps, and rear deltoids while also highlighting muscle separation and definition throughout the back and arms from a rear view.

Most Muscular

The competitor flexes various muscle groups to emphasize overall muscle mass, density, and conditioning. This pose may include flexing the chest, arms, shoulders, and abs in various combinations to create a visually impressive display of muscularity and vascularity from head to toe.
