What is The Bridge?

The Bridge is a free eight-week program from Barbell Medicine, the outfit run by Dr. Jordan Feigenbaum and Dr. Austin Baraki - physicians who are also accomplished strength coaches. It is named for exactly what it does: bridge the gap between a novice linear progression (Starting Strength, StrongLifts, GreySkull) and real intermediate programming.

It ships as a genuinely excellent free ebook plus spreadsheet, and the ebook is half the value - a crash course in fatigue management, RPE and the evidence behind how the program is built.

How it works

You train three main lifting days per week, with optional GPP days between them for conditioning and higher-rep accessory work. The competition lifts are still the backbone, but The Bridge introduces variations - tempo squats, pin presses, rack pulls and friends - to develop weak positions and add volume the novice programs never had.

Loading is prescribed by RPE rather than fixed weights: a typical slot might be a single at RPE 8 followed by back-off sets a percentage lighter. Volume and intensity wave across the eight weeks so stress accumulates and dissipates deliberately instead of ratcheting until you stall.

Learning RPE

The Bridge’s biggest gift is teaching you autoregulation. RPE - rating a set by how many reps you had left - replaces the add-5-lb-forever rule that just stopped working for you. Strong days load heavier, rough days keep you honest, and either way the intended stimulus lands.

Expect to be poorly calibrated for the first couple of weeks; everyone is. Err conservative, film sets, and compare your ratings to bar speed. By week eight you will own a skill that makes every future program - Barbell Medicine’s or anyone else’s - run better.

Who it’s for

The Bridge is squarely for the post-novice: your linear progression has stalled, resets have stopped paying, and you want a structured, evidence-based next step rather than a random intermediate template. It also suits lifters returning from a layoff who want to rebuild sensibly.

It is not for first-day beginners (run a linear progression first - The Bridge assumes established technique and a base of strength), nor for lifters who actively dislike RPE and want every weight prescribed.

Strengths & trade-offs

Strengths: free, rigorously reasoned, and educational in a way few programs bother to be. The GPP days build conditioning most strength programs ignore, and the variation work fixes positions the novice programs never touched.

Trade-offs: the RPE learning curve is real and the first weeks can feel unmoored without a fixed number to chase, the lift variations take setup and patience, and there is no weekly PR dopamine - progress reveals itself over the block, not every Friday.

How to run it

Download the free ebook and spreadsheet from Barbell Medicine (button below) and actually read the ebook before week one - the program makes far more sense with the reasoning attached. Calibrate your RPE conservatively and do the GPP days; they are part of the program, not a suggestion.

Run the eight weeks straight through, then either repeat it with better calibration or step into one of Barbell Medicine’s follow-on templates. Either way, you leave with intermediate programming skills, not just eight weeks of workouts.
