What is Madcow 5×5?

Madcow 5×5 is a classic intermediate strength program - a scaled evolution of Bill Starr’s original 5×5. It is the program lifters typically graduate to once beginner routines like Starting Strength or StrongLifts stop working, when you can no longer add weight to the bar every single session.

It keeps the simple, full-body, three-days-a-week structure of a 5×5 but changes how you progress: instead of adding weight every workout, you add it once per week.

How it works

Each main lift uses ramping sets - five sets that climb in weight up to a top set of 5, rather than five straight sets across. The top set is the driver: it is the heaviest work of the day and the number you are trying to beat.

You train three days a week, full-body, with the days alternating between heavier and lighter work to manage fatigue. Later versions add an intensity element (for example a heavier triple or a new top-set PR) to keep pushing the ceiling upward.

Weekly progression

Progress is made weekly, not per session. Each week you add a small increment to your top sets and try to beat the previous week’s best. Because the jumps are weekly rather than every workout, they are sustainable for far longer than a novice program.

When progress finally stalls, you reset slightly and build back up - the same logic that keeps most intermediate programs rolling.

Who it’s for

Madcow is ideal for the early intermediate: someone who has exhausted daily linear progression and wants a simple, proven next step that still fits three sessions a week. It builds a strong, well-rounded base across the main barbell lifts.

It is not sport-specific peaking, and advanced lifters or dedicated powerlifters will eventually want more specialised programming. Raw beginners should stay on daily progression a while longer.

Strengths & trade-offs

Strengths: simple, time-efficient, full-body, and a smooth on-ramp from novice to intermediate training. The ramping sets keep heavy work honest without excessive volume.

Trade-offs: it can feel monotonous, the ramping top sets get genuinely heavy, and it lacks the accessory and hypertrophy focus some lifters want alongside strength.

How to run it

Seed the program with weights you can currently hit for a clean top set of 5, then follow the weekly ramp, beating your top set by a small margin each week. Keep the light days light - they are there to let the heavy days keep progressing.
