How to Calculate Your Squat 1RM
The basic process is simple.
Take a recent squat set where you know:
The amount of weight you lifted
The number of reps you completed
You can then use a one rep max formula to estimate how much you could potentially lift for one repetition.
For example, let's say you squat 315 lb for 5 reps.
A 1RM formula can use those numbers to estimate your maximum single. The result isn't a guarantee that you can actually squat that weight today, but it gives you a useful approximation of your current squat strength.

What Makes a Good Set for Estimating Your Squat PR?
Not every set will give you an equally useful estimate.
If you're trying to estimate your squat 1RM, the best starting point is generally a recent, challenging set performed with consistent technique.
A set of 3–6 reps is particularly useful because it is heavy enough to reflect your strength without requiring you to actually attempt a true one-rep maximum. Research and commonly used 1RM equations tend to be more reliable with lower rep sets than with very high-rep sets.
For example, these sets can all provide an estimate:
225 lb × 8 reps
275 lb × 5 reps
315 lb × 3 reps
However, the 315 × 3 set may give you a more useful indication of your maximum strength than a much lighter set of 15 or 20 reps.
That's because a high-rep set measures more than just your ability to produce maximum strength. Muscular endurance, fatigue, breathing, pacing, and technique can have a much greater effect on the result.
Does Doing More Reps Make the Estimate More Accurate?
Not necessarily.
It might seem logical that doing more reps would give a calculator more information, but the opposite can happen once you get into higher rep ranges.
If you can squat a weight for 20 reps, your result is influenced heavily by muscular endurance. Two lifters with similar one-rep strength can have very different 20-rep squat performances.
As a result, high-rep sets generally produce less reliable 1RM predictions than lower-rep sets. Many commonly used formulas are intended primarily for lower-rep sets, with estimates becoming less dependable as the number of repetitions increases.
For estimating your squat 1RM, a hard set of roughly 2–6 reps is a good target.
You can still use higher-rep sets with a calculator, but treat the result as a rough estimate rather than an exact squat PR.
The Closer You Are to Your Limit, the Better
There is another important factor besides the number of reps: how hard the set actually was.
Imagine two lifters both squat 275 lb for 5 reps.
The first lifter finishes the fifth rep with several more reps left in the tank.
The second lifter finishes the fifth rep right at their limit while maintaining good technique.
Those two sets don't necessarily tell us the same thing about the lifter's one-rep strength.
For the purpose of estimating your squat 1RM, a challenging set that is reasonably close to your current limit is generally more informative than a set that was performed far below your capacity.
That doesn't mean you need to take every set to failure. In fact, deliberately grinding every squat set to failure isn't necessary. The important thing is that the weight and reps represent a meaningful test of your current strength.
Example: Estimating Your Squat PR
Let's say your recent squat workout included:
315 lb × 5 reps

Use Your Best Recent Squat Set

Ideally, choose a recent set that:

Is within a relatively low-to-moderate rep range
Wasn't performed after extreme fatigue
Avoid using an unusually easy warm-up set or a high-rep set where your performance was primarily limited by endurance.

Your Squat 1RM Can Change From Day to Day
Your estimated squat PR isn't a permanent number.
Your performance can change depending on sleep, fatigue, training volume, nutrition, stress, and how you feel on the day of the workout.
That means an estimated 1RM should be viewed as a snapshot of your current strength, not an exact measurement that never changes.
If you have a particularly strong training session and hit a new rep PR, you may have a higher estimated 1RM even if you never attempt a heavier single.
Likewise, a poor night's sleep or accumulated fatigue can cause your estimated 1RM to be lower on a particular day without meaning you've actually lost significant strength.
How to Calculate Your 1RM for Other Lifts
